The line revealed the bug

Imagine the scene. You had a rough day at work and finally make it to the burger place. Fries? Maybe. They are extra calories, but it has been a long day. You build the order, enter your phone number, and wait for the verification code.

The code arrives: 598656. You type it in. “Okay, it has been a rough day. I deserve the fries.” Then you tap Back instead of OK. No. You have to start the phone-number step again. By the time the screen comes back, the fries feel like one more decision. “Fine. Fries are unnecessary anyway.”

At America Burgers in Tel Aviv, I watched the same loop repeat: leave verification, re-enter a phone number, wait for another message, and try again while the line waited. Every moment like this is an opportunity to abandon. The restaurant loses throughput; the customer loses momentum.

This is not a complaint about blue. Color can be perfectly usable when labels, hierarchy, position, and state do the rest. The problem is that the interface made two opposite outcomes look like peers at the moment one of them was supposed to finish the order.

A confirmation screen is the baton pass

Verification is the moment the customer hands the order to the restaurant system. They chose food, entered a number, requested a code, and now need one clear action to keep moving.

When OK and Back share a color, size, weight, and close position, the user has to work out the labels under pressure. A line adds social pressure: people are watching, the kiosk is public, and everyone behind you can see the hesitation.

The wrong tap is not random. It is what happens when the design makes the user do too much guessing. The main action should stand out; the way out should look like a way out.

The evidence is bigger than one burger

A usability evaluation of three fast-food self-order kiosks tested 30 first-time participants. Thirty-three percent said they were unclear about the operating process, and the researchers found that ineffective back-step prompts produced long ordering times after errors.

That study is not a measurement of America Burgers and cannot prove this modal caused every re-entry. It matches the failure’s shape: a kiosk sold as a queue reducer can amplify queues when recovery is unclear.

I also mention a parallel case at Eat’s Cafeteria, where the same system reportedly caused the same problem. That is a useful comparison, but I have not independently verified it yet; the exact Eat’s article should be linked before we present it as documented evidence.

The kiosk did not fail when the code was wrong. It failed when the right next action looked wrong.

Error prevention beats error messaging

Nielsen’s error-prevention rule is simple: the best error message is the problem that never happens. Here, that means making the next step obvious, giving it clear visual priority, separating it from Back, and keeping Back secondary.

W3C makes a related point about contrast: people can understand controls through words, position, or context, but visual states still need enough contrast from the colors around them. The rule is not “give every button a different color.” The rule is “make the action easy to read.”

The useful test is not a quiet screenshot review. Put ten people who have never seen the kiosk in front of it, with a line behind them. Watch the first tap, then count re-entry, repeated SMS, completion time, and abandonment.

The queue is part of the interface

Digital products measure the screen and ignore the room. A restaurant kiosk has a second interface around it: the queue, waiting customers, staff watching failed orders, and the kitchen receiving work.

That is why this distinction matters. A misplaced tap can trigger a new message, a new wait, a new phone-number entry, and another chance to abandon. Every one of those moments is an opportunity to leave. The cost spreads across customer, restaurant, and SMS service.

The fix is not a redesign theatre project. It is a small act of respect: make “continue” look like continue, make “go back” look like go back, then test the whole flow where the pressure actually exists. If a queue keeps teaching users to press the wrong button, the interface is the thing that needs training.
